I give people this example to describe us and how God works.

You are this bucket filled with stuff.

God is the eternal/never-ending flow of water that is being poured into you, this bucket.

With all our stuff in the bucket, water overflows.

So yes, God and us take out these stuff so that more of his water can fill us.

At different points of our life, we can be at different points of life.

Sometimes it feels like you are removing the top layer of stuff and having your first taste of God being part of your new freed up section of the bucket.

Sometimes, it feels like a scoop is helping you remove a lot of sand out.

Sometimes, it feels like you’re in the middle of scooping everything out. There is still half a bucket of stuff left but you’re in good progress of scooping those stuff out. It hurts and it feels like the end of the world. But secretly you know it’s not. It’s the most painful experience you’ve had but you know you are strong enough for this pain. You feel stronger with this new strength from the water.

Oblivious to what’s coming up next.

Sometimes, it feels like you’re at the bottom of the bucket. The scoop can’t help you anymore. You have to use your hands to reach corners of the bucket that the scoop can’t reach. Sometimes you have to dive your head right to the bottom of the bucket to use your hands to reach the bottom. At this point you are most vulnerable, you have experience of being half full and half empty, but it feels shaky and unstable to have nothing of your stuff left in the bucket. It is the most painful experience you’ve ever had. It does feel like the end of the world. You’re not sure if water is in your bucket. Sand sinks in water doesn’t it? You use your hands to scrap out your stuff, it hurts, the friction between your hands, the sand (stuff) and the surface of the bucket. You can feel every single grain of sand on your fingers. It feels like forever. These grains cannot be removed. You’ve failed. You’ve added more sand into your bucket. It’s the temporary relief you need. You thank God this is not a test. Failure is acceptable. You are allowed to try again. You hope one day that as you try again and again that one day, eventually, your bucket will be clean.
